VT-NH Komen Race for the Cure Grosses $469,823 Plus
MANCHESTER, VT – Exact
numbers are still being tallied and dollars are still coming in but,
as of this writing, the 2009 VT-NH Komen Race for the Cure, held July
26 at Hildene Meadows in Manchester, Vermont, attracted approximately
2,500 runners and walkers, around 200 volunteers, and has brought in
close to $470,000.
That figure includes cash
sponsorships, in-kind sponsorships (radio and TV airtime, newspaper
and magazine space, etc.), the silent auction, raffle proceeds, merchandise
sales, race registrations and pledges (pledge monies are still coming
in and will be accepted until September 1).
“We are very, very
pleased and grateful,” said Race Co-Chair, Becky Burke. “Given
the fact that we’re in the worst economy in fifty years, and we’ve
been experiencing one of the wettest summers anyone can remember, we
didn’t know what to expect. We did very well, really. I should
say that all the folks who stepped up to the plate, opened their hearts,
and their wallets, they did very well.”
Since the first local race
in 1993, the VT-NH Affiliate has netted, not including this year’s
monies, more than $5.7 million, seventy-five percent of which ($4.3
million) went to local community breast cancer education, treatment
and screening programs. The remaining 25 percent ($1.4 million) went
to the national Susan G. Komen for the Cure Grants Program to fund research.
